Like a phoenix: Tega Cay teen soars after burn accident

He’d put a DVD in his laptop in the hospital room and, waiting for the movie to load, happened to glance into the dark, barely reflective screen.

He turned away and pushed his laptop aside.

Bryant’s roots run deep

Angela Bryant stretched out in the back seat of a green Buick and read books while she waited on her mother to finish teaching grammar school.

“When the coast was clear, she would come get me… I think I terrorized all my babysitters,” Bryant laughs as she thinks of that moment in her childhood. “[There was] nothing I loved better than being with her.”

Bryant, 63, a North Carolina senator, grew up in the Little Raleigh neighborhood, just minutes from downtown Rocky Mount.

 

A young life in high gear

Beneath Friday night lights at Garinger High School, senior Elexus White fidgets with her multicolored rhinestone ring, waiting to hear who has won the vote for homecoming queen.

She links arms with her uncle, Jarrett Peake, who surprised her at the gates just before the game, arriving in time to be her escort. They have taken their place on the field with the rest of the homecoming court as halftime begins.
